Beautiful, mildly tangy orangey flavor in a rich, dark chocolate cake- pure indulgence!

For cake-

  • All purpose flour- 1 cup
  • Baking powder- 1 tsp
  • Baking soda- ½ tsp
  • Orange- 1 large
  • Unsalted butter- 1/2 cup
  • Cocoa powder good quality - ½ cup
  • Boiling water- 90ml
  • Eggs large- 3
  • Powdered sugar- 1 cup

For Frosting

  • Dark Chocolate good quality- 125 gm, broken into small pieces
  • Heavy cream- 125 ml
  • Dark chocolate shavings- as required
  • Candied orange- as required
  • Orange zest- 1 tsp grated


For cake-

  1. Boil an orange in water for approx. 15 minutes and let it cool.
  2. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and keep aside.
  3. In a bowl, add cocoa powder and make a paste using boiling water. Keep aside.
  4. Deseed the cooled orange and blitz in a blender to make a puree out of it.
  5. To the same blender, add butter, sugar and blitz.
  6. Add 1 egg at a time and keep blending.
  7. Lastly add the cocoa paste and give a final mix.
  8. Add this liquid paste to the flour mixture and fold in lightly until just combined.
  9. Pour this cake batter to oil brushed cake tin.
  10. 10. Pop into a pre-heated oven at 180 deg C for 30 min or until a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.
  11. 11. Let the cake rest in oven for 2-3 min before taking out.
  12. 12. Cool on a wire rack, demold and let it cool completely before frosting.

For frosting-

  1. Place the dark chocolate pieces in a bowl.
  2. Heat the cream in a sauce pan until it comes to a boil.
  3. Immediately add it to the chocolate bowl and keep whisking until a smooth and glossy ganache is ready.
  4. Spread it evenly over the cake using a palette knife.
  5. Decorate with chocolate shavings, candied orange and sprinkle a little lemon zest over it.
